The Hidden Cost of Living Life on Autopilot

Written by Suzanne Mason

Do you ever feel like you’re just going through the motions—living life on autopilot?
The alarm buzzes at 7 a.m., you rush through coffee, squeeze onto a crowded train, and tackle work that pays the bills but doesn’t light you up. Days blur together; evenings disappear into mindless scrolling. You’re grateful for stability, yet something feels off.

Living life on autopilot might feel safe, but it slowly drains purpose and joy. Without realizing it, you drift through years without intention, missing the chance to create a life aligned with your true self. Let’s explore the hidden costs of autopilot living and how you can take back control of your life.

Signs of living life on autopilot

Sometimes life just feels boring living life on autopilot is more than just mere boredom. These are the signs you might see:

  • Your days feel like they have gone by in a blur, you can’t remember what you have accomplished that day.
  • You lack motivation to do the important things and so you procrastinate.
  • You feel out of alignment with your true self. Like something’s off.
  • You catch yourself mindlessly scrolling or binge-watching to fill the void.
  • Life feels like it is happening to you, instead of you being at the helm.
  • You feel little joy even though your life is not too bad.
  • You might also feel lonely, disconnected from others.

Why We Stay Stuck in Autopilot Mode

Many of us live our lives on autopilot. We go through Mondays to Fridays in a blur, wishing for the weekend. Then the weekend goes by in a blur and we realised we have spent it with our butts firmly planted on the sofa, scrolling on our phones whilst we pretend to try and sit through a movie. If drifting through life feels so unfulfilling and feels like a dread, why do we stay there?

Being on autopilot is comfortable.

As humans, we like comfort and familiarity. We resist change and we fear change. Familiar routines feel safe, we know what to expect and it comforts us. Even when it no longer serves us, we stay with it.

Being on autopilot means we cannot fail

When we simply drift through life, it means we don’t have any goals to work towards. When you don’t have goals, you can’t really fail since there is no benchmark to measure against. When we are on autopilot, we also don’t try anything new in life. Trying some things new means being comfortable with not being great at it and the possibility of failing. So being autopilot negates all those possibilities.

Being on autopilot means no surprises

When people say they love surprises, they mean that that they love good surprises. After all, bad surprises generally mean bad things such as accidents, retrenchment, divorces and breakups. When we live on autopilot, we play safe to reduce the bad surprises, however it means we miss out on good surprises too.

Being on autopilot means the control (and fault) lies with others

Do you know people who don’t make any decisions or leave it so late that others make it for them?  When people do this, they are absolving themselves of the responsibility for those decisions. Similarly, when we live on autopilot, it absolves ourselves of the responsibility of living an intentional and meaningful life. If life doesn’t go well, it’s our bad luck or just our fate, or as it has been for thousands of years, our parents’ fault.

How to Stop Living on Autopilot and Reclaim Your Purpose

Being on autopilot mode is something we have slowly incorporated into the way we live. Like a habit or a routine. It is something we have picked up and so we can unlearn this and reprogramme a new way of being.

Start with self-reflection

When we are on autopilot mode, we lose self-awareness. We stop paying attention to how we really think and feel daily. We lose touch with ourselves. To take yourself off autopilot mode, you need to start with self-reflection. What’s holding you back? What are parts of your life that can do with a change? What has been making you happy or unhappy? What can you do to reset your life? Get to know yourself again.

Lean into your purpose

The beauty of humans is that even when we are in autopilot mode, we very often still have goals that we dream of achieving one day. I want you to dig deep and think about a goal or dream you have tucked away and make this into your purpose. Now pick one actionable step you can take today to build momentum towards that goal. You could schedule a workout, book the yoga class, update your resume.

Be intentional with your actions

You need to be intentional with your daily actions so they count towards something you are working on. You need to set small, concrete intentions. For example, if you have a goal of getting into shape, you would set the intentions for the day such as “I will walk for 30 minutes today” or “I will prepare a nutritious dinner at home today”. Then, you will repeat this consistently until it becomes a habit, or even better, a part of who you are.

Develop an internal locus of control

Sometimes we get swept up in autopilot mode, it can feel like we do not have control over our lives. we forget about our own agency over our lives. But you need to remember that you have the control within you. This is called an internal locus of control. This kind of control is knowing that you are the pilot, it is up to you make the changes you want.

Can you imagine the freedom of charting your own course, of living with intention instead of drifting?
